Day One

23 hours and 15 minutes done. Well that wasn't so bad was it?

Day 1:

Mood: 5/10 - Not miserable but struggling with everything. A chore.
Energy: 2/10 - I'm sick so that doesn't say much.
Withdrawals? Nothing major. I waaaay lowered my caffeine intake and there were times of the day that I felt nauseous and achey because of it. But I don't think the sugar has left my system yet, so nothing on that front.
Ate/Drank:
  • Skipped brekkie. Wasn't hungry.
  • Lunch - two venison burgers with peri peri sauce.
  • Dinner - Turkey breast steak and sweet potato fries with peri peri sauce.
  • Drank: 3 litres of water, 2 cups of peppermint tea.

Truth be told, the first day wasn't too hard. I didn't expect it to be. It brought with it it's own challenges which took my mind off the changes at hand. I have conjunctivitis in my eyes, and a sinus infection. Ergo, I can't talk very well and I can't see very well. Also, I feel like shit. With all that in mind, I can say that I didn't notice much difference yet.

I normally drink about 600mg caffeine in a day so with that in mind I had bought some pro plus to replace it as I wasn't drinking coke or coffee. However, I decided it might be as well to taper off caffeine at the same time as I give up sugar. I pushed my luck somewhat, only taking 225mg caffeine all day. There were definitely times during the day I felt nauseated and my head was sore, but nothing too bad.

Toward the end of the day I started to feel really burnt out. I suspect my body is just beginning to run low on sugar. Give it 24 - 36 hours and I'll be all out. We will see what happens then.

Psychologically I felt a real shift on day one. There are so many anchors during my day - my 2 or 3 coffees, my 2 or 3 cokes and my various snack times. I am always thinking about the next one and planning around it. The absence of that was liberating. I felt able to just do what I was doing and not worry about what was around the corner. I feel empowered too. It won't mean much to anyone else, but for me to know that on day one I went the whole day without coffee, coke, bread, sweets, chocolate, ice cream, rice, noodles, flavoured water, porridge...I am listing EVERYTHING I eat. I got through the first day no problems. It feels like an achievement to me. Rome wasn't built in a day, but we're off and running.
